Genbi Gorge in Ichinoseki: Spring Scenery
Cherry trees bloom along both banks of the dynamic gorge for about 2km.
This is a renowned cherry blossom spot with around 200 Somei-yoshino and Edo-higan cherry trees.
It is said that the old Edo-higan cherry trees were planted at the order of the feudal lord Date Masamune, and they are known as the “Teizan-zakura” (Teizan Cherry Trees).
The Iwai River, which flows through Genbi Gorge from Mt. Kurikoma, is a vivid emerald green.
The contrast with the cherry blossoms creates a spectacular view.
When Will the Cherry Blossoms at Genbi Gorge Bloom? Typical Best-Viewing Times and Latest Updates
In a typical year, the blossoms open in mid-April and reach their best viewing period from late April to early May.
Note that the cherry blossoms in spring 2023 are expected to bloom considerably earlier than usual.

The blossoms have begun to open little by little, and you can now enjoy some cherry blossoms.
Only a small portion has bloomed so far. The best viewing period is still to come.
By the way, the cherry trees at BELLINO HOTEL, said to be the earliest to bloom (?) in Ichinoseki, have in recent years reached full bloom as soon as early April.
Cherry trees line the front of the hotel and are popular for wedding location photos as well.
